Child Psychiatry Program Head

Position: Division Head, Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (CAP), with opportunity
to also hold the position of CAP Fellowship Program Director and Medical
Director of the Child Psychiatry Inpatient and Crisis Stabilization Units,
Albany Medical Center Department of Psychiatry or recruit to fill these
additional roles

of Psychiatry (Division Head, Medical Director) and the Vice Chair for
Education (Fellowship)
Position Description: The Division Head will lead the Department of Psychiatry’s child program and will
work with the Department Chair to
shape the configuration of service and consultation pathways for children,
adolescents and their families within Albany Medical Health System, which
includes an inpatient unit now under development at AMCH, plans for crisis
stabilization and/or day treatment space, oversight of faculty child
psychiatrists and psychologists and other practitioners on the department’s child psychiatry team,
including developing options for expansion of child outpatient services in both
the faculty practice and training clinic.
The Division Head will additionally
serve (or supervise a recruitment) as the CAP Fellowship Program Director and
Director of the Child Inpatient and Crisis Stabilization Units and will
spearhead innovative contributions to the provision of child mental health care
in the Capital Region, joining with community partners, and other regional and
state initiatives, including Project Teach.
The Division Head will work with both the Department Chair and the Chair
of Pediatrics to implement, revise, and participate in collaborative partnerships
and integrative care models within the AMC Department of Pediatrics including the
Division of Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics, as well as the inpatient, emergency,
and outpatient settings.
Preferred qualifications (required at time of application)
·
Strong clinical background with demonstrated
professional achievements in child psychiatry
·
Previous experience in clinical and/or academic
leadership, administration, and medical education, particularly graduate
medical education
·
Experience conducting and presenting original research
·
Medical degree from an accredited medical school and
completion of an approved psychiatric residency and CAP fellowship
·
Current DEA registration
·
Board certification in both general adult and child and adolescent psychiatry, unrestricted eligibility for medical
licensure in New York state
·
Excellent knowledge of child psychiatric illnesses and treatment
·
Experience with crisis assessment/intervention tools and
techniques
·
Strong working knowledge of general psychiatric
principles and practices
·
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
·
Proficiency with an electronic health record system
·
Personal motivation and self-direction to function
independently and within multidisciplinary teams necessary to achieve the goals
and vision of the position
Role and Expectations
Division Head:
·
Supervision of CAP faculty and staff
·
Program development and recruitment
·
Attendance at departmental and health system meetings
as designated by the Department Chair
·
Oversight (with the Vice Chair for Education) of the
CAP Fellowship Program
·
Oversight of the Child Inpatient Unit and the Child
Consult Service
·
Participation in clinical care and supervision of
clinical care
·
Development and oversight of education in child
psychiatry (with the Vice chair for Education) in the CAP Fellowship Program,
the AMC Psychiatry Clerkship and in the General Adult Residency Program
·
Participation in teaching and supervision of fellows
and residents
Medical Director, Child
Inpatient and Crisis Stabilization Units:
·
Serve in this role or supervise and recruit the
Medical Director
·
Supervise faculty and resident physicians, clinical psychologists, mid-level practitioners, medical students and other
staff/team members on the Child Inpatient and Crisis Stabilization Units
·
Participate in
and direct staff and program development, team meetings and quality improvement
initiatives
·
Establish linkages with community referral entities
and academic and clinical departments within Albany Medical Health System, with the goal of improving and expanding
the scope of the unit’s multidisciplinary services,
care delivery and successful disposition planning
·
Establish positive relationships with the local medical
community
·
With the Nursing Supervisor, participate in
preparing reports for the Medical Staff Executive Committee, Division Head and/or
Department Chair, including quality assurance activities/reports as necessary
·
Assess and screen patients for admission, conduct/perform
psychiatric evaluations, including interviews, medical histories, physical
exams, observations, utilize psychological testing and other measures and provide direct
and indirect supervision of these clinical activities when conducted by residents and
fellows
·
Analyze data, provide diagnoses, develop, and
oversee multidisciplinary treatment plans and adjust as needed
·
Prescribe, administer and direct diagnosis-specific pharmacotherapy,
neuromodulation and psychotherapies when indicated and monitor patients
to determine efficacy and potential side effects of treatments and provide direct and indirect supervision of these clinical
activities when conducted by residents and fellows
·
Complete all necessary clinical documentation in an
accurate and timely manner
·
Participate in afterhours coverage of the unit as
necessary, in conjunction with trainees in the CAP Fellowship and Adult
Residency Programs
Program Director, CAP Fellowship:
·
Serve in this role or supervise and recruit the Director
·
Administrative oversight of the
program including all rotations, placements, supervision, patient care
assignments and educational activities for all fellows
·
Attend monthly GME meetings and other
scheduled GME activities
·
Regular evaluation of fellows,
faculty, and the program, including participation in AMC’s GME Annual Program
Evaluation peer review process
·
Recruitment, selection, promotion,
and disciplinary interventions including remediation and dismissal
in compliance with AMC’s GMEC guidelines
·
Monitoring of
fellows’ duty hours, competence, and compliance with all regulations and
standards and
in accordance with the ACGME milestones for child and adolescent psychiatry
·
Monitor and improve the fellows’ work
environments when necessary
·
With the support of the fellowship
coordinator, manage all letters of agreement with affiliate sites, including
sustaining adequate quality within these sites and develop goals and objects
for all educational and clinical activities
·
Ensure continued program accreditation
and compliance with all institutional, NYS and ACGME requirements
·
Provision of clinical services and
participation in direct or indirect supervision of
fellows in all settings as needed
