Description: Remediation is an essential component of residency training and often is a demanding task for PD's and APD's. Successful remediation requires a personalized approach to the learners needs. During this virtual session, the following points will be discussed: the importance of preventing remediation, early detection of performance deficits and stepwise progression in remediation. Participants will engage in a practical discussion of the steps in remediation from a formal warning to the development of a performance improvement plan to probation and/or dismissal. The session will offer examples of a remediation plan, key components of a remediation letter, and different resources for both program directors and trainees.

Description: The medical residency experience is notoriously demanding, with long hours, high stress, and emotional challenges taking a toll on residents’ mental health. Psychiatry residents, in particular, are susceptible to increased anxiety, depression, and burnout due to the emotionally charged nature of their specialty. In response to these challenges, a Texas public academic health science center introduced a “Wellness Wednesday” initiative, using a monthly survey to monitor the mental well-being of its psychiatry residents. The survey allowed residents to regularly assess their mental health through reflective self-assessment while also providing a safe space to share their experiences and struggles. This session will explore the creation and implementation of the “Wellness Wednesday” survey and discuss its effectiveness as a tool for tracking and improving residents’ mental health. Participants will gain insight into how the survey has fostered resilience, enhanced morale, and provided crucial emotional support to residents facing the pressures of medical training. By exploring the positive outcomes of this initiative, the session will also offer practical guidance on how other residency programs can adopt similar wellness strategies to support the mental well-being of their trainees.
